MPS Company, AJS Labels, Win Top Industry Awards
AJS Labels, now part of Multi Packaging Solutions, has recently been presented with three prestigious awards at two leading industry events. AJS Labels scooped the coveted ‘Label of the Year’ award at the UK Packaging Awards for L’Oréal’s Magic Retouch range. The same labels also won two Flexotech Awards for the categories ‘Labels (line and tone)’ and ‘Combination Printing’ further emphasising the outstanding quality and technical skills involved.
It was essential that the launch of L’Oréal’s new hair colour product, Magic Retouch was supported with an impressive label to ensure the brand stood out in a busy retail environment. The labels for the range were conventionally-printed in 12 colours and enhanced with hot foil.
Phil Smith, Managing Director at AJS Labels, said: “Labels for hair-care products are all about colour precision. Outstanding repro transformed a process-set image into a three spot-colour design and eliminated any variations along the run. The strands of hair are a work-of-art in themselves requiring precise registration and plate pressure.”
For an up-market no-label-look, the team selected a clear-on-clear material and worked hard to achieve a perfect colour match with the turquoise container. The new range required detailed product information so AJS developed a wrap-around label and printed ‘mirror’ text that could be read perfectly through the clear material once peeled back. This approach saved space and the clever use of a release varnish ensured the label mechanics worked smoothly.
The judges for both awards were impressed with the outcome resulting in the FlexoTech judges commenting: “The ability to combine fine type on a solid background and printing on the reverse is impressive, while keeping very tight register. Utilising 12 colours, this very simple design was produced to perfection.”
Phil Smith continued: “It is very pleasing to win these awards that are a credit to our employees. AJS Labels is now part of MPS’s network of global operations and we share the same commitment to delivering outstanding products. The high standards we set ourselves are underlined by the fact that MPS was also presented with ‘Packaging Company of the Year’ at the UK Packaging Awards. Over the coming months, we expect to rebrand our business and unite under a single globally recognised identity. This will present a coherent proposition for customers and positions the company as an enlarged business sharing common standards and values.”
